Keloids: How to prevent these raised scars

If you have (or had) a keloid, you have a higher risk of getting another one.  You also have a higher risk if one (or more) of your parents, siblings, or children has (had) a keloid.

The good news is that there are things you can do to reduce your risk of getting a full-blown keloid. Please find the common causes of keloids and what you can do to prevent each from causing a keloid.

A dermatologist is a medical doctor who specializes in treating conditions affecting the skin, hair, and nails. One of the conditions that a dermatologist may treat is a keloid scar, which is a type of scar that develops when the body produces too much collagen during the healing process. Keloid scars are often raised and reddish in color and can be itchy and painful.

To treat a keloid scar, a dermatologist may recommend a number of different approaches. These may include corticosteroid injections, which can help to reduce inflammation and shrink the scar; cryotherapy, which involves freezing the scar tissue with liquid nitrogen; or laser therapy, which can help to flatten the scar and make it less visible.

In some cases, a dermatologist may also recommend surgical removal of the keloid scar. This may be done using a number of different techniques, such as excision, in which the scar tissue is cut away, or dermabrasion, in which the scar tissue is sanded down using a specialized tool.

It's important to note that keloid scars can be difficult to treat and may require multiple treatments and a combination of approaches to achieve the best results. A dermatologist can work with you to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your individual needs and goals.
