American Academy of Dermatology's Advice on Sunscreen (SPF 30+)

Sunscreen only works if you apply it correctly. Follow these tips to make sure you’re protected from the sun’s harmful UV rays: Watch this video on how to apply sunscreen.  And visit the AAD's website on how to apply sunscreen.

Choose these types of sunscreen:

Broad spectrum (UVA/UVB)

SPF 30+

Water resistant

Apply before going outdoors.  It will take your skin 15 minutes to absorb the sunscreen. Applying while in the sun could leave you unprotected and you may burn. The average adult will need about 1 oz (about a handful) of sunscreen to cover their exposed skin.  Suncreen should be applied to any skin exposed to the sun.  Application is to more than your face remember to apply to scalp, neck, ears, tops of your feet, legs and any other exposed bare skin.

You could consider wearing a hat.  Be sure to remember to protect your lips with a lip balm sunscreen.

Be sure to follow the instructions on the sunscreen on reapplication.  This should occur at least every two hours.
